The Mikado Allegra's take on the Classic English Operetta The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan was inspired by the Nanking Massacre (mass murder and rape) during the Second World War and drawings by the Japanese artist, Kuniyoshi. It is hard to pinpoint responsibility when human atrocities such as the Nanking Massacre occur- for leaders tend to hide behind the very beaurocrocies they themselves created. The characters in The Mikado are equally deceptive- from afar their costumes appear to be one way, but when given a closer examination...you will find something perhaps, more revealing. A kimono made of flesh? A kings robe made out of women? umbrellas?
